DOUBLE OH, SEVEN...

I'll leave you all to form your own opinions, but I heart the badass, slightly kitsch Bond. Is he in here? Oh yes, there he is at the end. At any rate I will certainly be heading to my seat straight after voting this Nov. Thanks BuzzFeed for alerting me to what a week we have coming!

4. Magic Chef is on my hit list. As in "I'm gonna have you rubbed out." The jury is still out on the HomeDepot.

5. I read an entire book yesterday. No, it was not Shogun. Yes, I did manage to eat, stop by the parents for a chat, go shopping at Target and have numerous conversations on the phone. I can multitask.

IN SUPPORT

How cool - designer support for the Myanmar Cyclone!

LOVE MONKEYS

Super fun and touching story about star crossed monkeys! Presented in HD with incredible shots of the temple ruins that house the Temple Troupe and provide a realistic feel of the streets as they follow the rival Market Monkeys. It truly is a classic rich girl meets rebel street kid. If you believe that monkeys get into that kind of thing.

FREEDOM VS. STATE

I find the timing of this ruling very interesting. I am not at all sure how I feel about it. While I cherish my freedom (of choice, speech and protection), I am certain that not all my American cohorts can handle it. Is this a case of the lowest common denominator leading the law? Or are we in support of the Supreme Court and have faith that the system can surely weed out those rogues who flaunt our freedoms like weapons?

Currently there is a well designed and powerful exhibition on Post Katrina, New Orleans, at the A+D Museum. It ranges the information gamut and places real stats over their original projections and hosts photos of the flooded city next to plans on how to rebuild it by going green.

DEAL BREAKERS

I am too tired to dig up the blog post where I listed mine. Lovely.

Everywhere I look these days it seems that I am faced with other people's deal breakers. I over hear conversations about them in the checkout line at the grocery. Even the book I am reading is centered upon them. It's like I fell into a bubble where you can only talk about them. Weird.

But it got my attention. I love playing connect the dots, especially when they are obscure little signs that pop up, things I would have previously ignored. Over here I am learning that in my life, generally they serve as a warning, or preparation for something - since I am so hot on change and all. It's kind of nice actually. Relax, get into it, because it IS going to happen.

As I came home all uppity about them, a friend of mine extolled some more sage advice; deal breakers can change. Things you thought you could never live with, green veggies let's say, suddenly aren't so bad when you fall in love with a chef. Or you find yourself moving, when you swore that this city was IT for you.

Maybe if you are lucky it works both ways. And the chef doesn't mind your wanderlust, even though he is afraid to fly. I'd like to think that if we are paying attention, these are the times when we are being told to go for it! The stars are aligned and the runway is clear. What other sign could we need?

COMING HOME

It was a most interesting trip and while I am glad to be heading back to LA, for the first time I am little sad to go. Since I made a hasty exit 10 years ago from Sacramento I have returned a select handful of times. Each time I came with a purpose, escape cancer, attend a graduation, celebrate a retirement or face a reunion, and I was elated to return to my "new" life. I guess now with LA feeling all topsy turvy, I found solace in the old.

I spent the day visiting old stomping grounds. Wandering downtown with my favorite big leather bag and a white collared shirt, my aviator sunglasses and ipod, I felt impossibly chic and big city. I am a snob. I am aware of this, but not ashamed. How's that for snobby?! I found a playlist on the ipod that was perfect. The day was perfect, so perfect it made my eyes hurt.

In my time here I managed to:

Play parent for the first time

Tell a friend some not so nice, but very honest things

Meet a guy, and go on a first date

Finish a logo design and homepage

Garner a meeting with a headhunter/agent

Blog!

Hear some sage advice

Face the things that scare me most, bravely

See the beauty in a place I couldn't wait to leave once

Make a very tough decision.

Who knew I could cram so much into such a short span of time?

xoxo, wee

CONCLUSIONS

My vacation up north is drawing to a close. I am sitting on the patio sipping a cocktail enjoying the night air in Folsom for the last time. I find myself curious and a little scared of going home. I know that there is a lot of work in front of me. I need a new job. I have discovered what I want that to be - gad! Now I have to create it.

Here I stand, my little feet planted in a firm stance that looks stronger than it feels. Can you feel like a child at 29? Because I do. And I like it. Children are free. They are encouraged to dream. That has inspired me to hang on like hell, to the idea of Dream Big, Live Bigger. I have this one life, make it worth living.

I got to play parent to a little boy today. I am beginning to understand the draw of parenthood. It's fun! Lord only knows what I am supposed to do with that knowledge. Maybe it is just that the things that scare me most, aren't nearly so scary when you have to just do it.

So here I go, into the infinite. Destiny go me wings to fly. Fate give me clear skies. Faith give me courage to ask for what I want and take it! Someone I respect wrote that there is no room in success for passive people. Amen.

30 really is the new 20 isn't it?

MONO LAKE

The above is a satellite image of Mono Lake, the largest salt water lake in California. It distinctly shows the 3 islands, Pahoa (largest), Negit (the black one) and Gaines (the newest, a result of falling lake levels and named after Mono activist David Gaines), that make the lake a major migratory bird nesting hot spot. The lake resides just to the right of Yosemite and in a volcanically active section of the state.

I grew up nearly biologically connected to the lake, as my mother worked for the Mono Lake Committee (MLC). I have floated in it's ridiculously salty water. Played for countless hours on it's shores and napped in the back of the visitors center during board meetings. Strangely after all of that, this was my first trip in nearly 20 years back to the lake. I was shocked at how healthy the ecosystem of the area and the lake itself looked.

The last time I was at the lake, it was dying. The DWP was diverting water from its tributary watershed (to quench Los Angeles' thirst) at an alarming rate. The MLC was desperately trying to save this unique ecosystem - but it was looking like a loosing battle. Then in 1994 a landmark decision was made that began to return water to the lake. Slowly Mono is rising. Each year the MLC continues the fight and hopes for good snow pack. After all snow is the only thing that feeds the lake. But the lake could still die. The '94 decision is not a law and is nearly constantly revisited - especially in years of drought, when Los Angeles hungers for water. Like this year. In fact the lake is down 2 ft. from last year. Thus Mono's recovery continues but is not certain.

But I am hopeful that as we go green, conservation will become our prevailing frame of mind. I rejoined the MLC on this trip and I invite all of my readers to research the committee and perhaps decide to join for themselves. It is a worthy cause if there ever was one.

And in case anyone still believes that a lake of this size cannot die, I invite them to Owens Lake. Or rather the dusty bed where the lake used to reside.

POST IT

Recently a very good friend asked me to make a list of the things I want from life. I couldn't do it. Call me the ultimate commitment phobe. I've had it. Who cares if I don't get it right. I am making a damn list. Here goes:

1. Be happy.

2. Stop hiding from life. (this blog doesn't show all the nights I hide on my couch and watch too much of the history channel)

3. Make stuff.

4. Be fearless.

5. Fall in love, get married and figure out what a family is going to mean for me. (oh so girly, I know)

6. Make friends for life.

7. Be humble, and strong.

8. Own a house.

9. Own a vacation spot - no I do not want to own an island! But how do I know if it will be a hut on the beach or tee-pee in the woods?

10. Make living the priority everyday. (that means things like this blog, my art stay at the top of the to do list and I don't keep doing things that I don't like! or that stress me out)

* I have 3 really great women in my life to thank for all this clairity - D, K and Sparkles. who knew ladies, who knew? thank you for all your wisdom and leading by example. I'm coming!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY - MY LEAPING ANTHEM

If I could make a soundtrack to my life, each time I got afraid of what comes next, I would have this play. Because I would then suddenly, have the urge to go put on some make-up and spend a little cash (gads!) on something that makes me feel alive and gets my ass out in public.

TRAVELS

The best part of being unemployed? You can travel in the middle of the week, on a whim! You can also find yourself traveling (unexpectedly) when your blog buddies (whom you adore and envy - in a good way - and think are awesome girlie role models) are doing so as well. And while my little trips may not be to Vietnam or St. Barths, I am thinking that just the simple fact that I am out of the house, means I am on the right track.

Leap and the net will appear. Or so I have been told. So here I am -- leaping.

MR. SUN -- A CAUTIONARY TALE

At the end of yesterday's all day fashion adventure, someone said, "Hey. You got some sun." Cool, I thought, sunkissed. Until I got home and it looked like I had MADE OUT with Mr. Sun. What had happened? What was this strange sun burn I was sporting?

At several points yesterday I applied sun block. I am kind of a freak about sun exposure. So what went wrong, I wondered as I sipped a glass of wine and soaked in the bath tub. That shit can expire!! Like, within a year. Now, is this more of that knowledge (like offering your unsolicited opinion) that everyone else knows but somehow I missed?

Anyhow kids, as you run along into the sun shine, BUY NEW SUN SCREEN. Trust me, your forearms will thank you.

IN THE HEART OF HOLLYWOOD

Yesterday was a closed set, but I had to sneak some photos of the footware!! I cannot even believe who all I got to hangout with, Lanvin, Prada, Rick Owens, Zac Posen, the spread was amazing. I have never seen so much good stuff in one place.

It was an interesting 12 hours. I unpacked, hangered and organized trunks and duffel bags until long after I lost count. Keep Paris separated! Where's the shipment from Milan? Who's doing accessories - because each one of these rings is 15,000.00!

Then of course there was the talent. There was the painfully thin Hollywood actress with the very memorable voice who needed a tampon, and brought her own shoes (which I thought was very cool, since they were fantastic and we were running low on woman's footware). A sprinkling of models floated around like unsettled dust. The conversations I over heard between them, were snippets from the life of the insanely beautiful. Stories about how his sister went to Thailand on a whim, met a guy and fell in love. They are apparently getting married and moving to South Africa next week, to I don't know, surf or something. Um, ok. Words however are not the only area where the insanely beautiful differ from the rest of us. While I was lacing up these House of Holland booties on one of the girls I was face to face with her legs. Her skinny little, hairy legs. That's right, she came to a photo shoot looking like an Amazonian. Now, I only know myself, but if I had a photo shoot, I would spend the whole night beforehand plucking, picking, trimming and shaving.

Then there were the Rockers. The aging ones had their super young girlfriends in tow. The single guys made good conversation and took better care of themselves. All wanted to be dressed. I have never seen that many men, need that much help to pick an outfit. The last to arrive was the main event. Long dark hair, covered in art, tiny little rocker pants, large combat boots, I swear he has a smaller waist than I do. A part of his body he was more than happy to show off. Actually he ran around most of the day undressed. It was um, entertaining.

The stylist we worked with is a friendly acquaintance of mine (how I got the gig), and now I can see why she is so sought after. Long after I would have told the nearly naked rocker with a huge ego and no self confidence to fu*king get a grip, she patiently showed him the Galliano hood again and said for the 200th time, no those pants do not make you look fat. She has the patience of a saint. The good news is that when he needed a 4th change and no one else was around to help, I got to create his 4th look! Yes, me! And while it was soooo much fun to put him in this awesome Thom Browne trench and score this HUGE moonstone and black diamond ring for his digits, dealing with the rest of it is for the birds.

Man is it fun to try on careers! So while I don't think assisting is my next dream, I would love to be invited to be a guest stylist for L'Uomo Vogue any day!
