YOUR MAJESTY...

Over lunch it came to my attention that some people have never seen, tasted or been converted to The Blood Orange Appreciation Club. In honor of this majestic fruit, I give you the whole story of the fruit with more fiber than any of the top 20 fruits or vegetables consumed today!!

1. There are three types of blood oranges, the Tarocco (native to Italy), the Sanguinello (native to Spain), and the Moro, which is the newest variety of the three (they are not a cross between a plum and an orange as rumor supposedly has it).

2. The distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. The reason for the unusual internal color is related to light, temperature and variety.

3. Blood oranges cultivated in the United States are in season from December to March (Texas), and from November to May (California).

4. They make a killer martini!!

So, stock up kids! The season is nearly over!!
