ALL MASHED UP

2 nights ago I was having a super-after-our-bed-time conversation with Mom and she tackled me and my not-making-an-ass-of-myself issue. It kind of leveled me. She reminded me of the night she came home and found me in bed with my high school boyfriend - dead ass asleep, with all our clothes on. We had a good laugh about that and I told her some stuff (super boring and not of the yeah-we-totally-did-it-and-then-got-dressed-again variety), and then she said, "I know. You never drank because there was no way you would throw up in front of people. You wouldn't drive because you didn't want to learn stick and get it wrong first and gasp, have other people see. You had to be perfect." There was me sitting open mouthed and slightly scared of my uber perceptive mother, on the couch.
* this is an excerpt from a much longer post that sits in my drafts folder titled, "unfinished"

SOMETIMES IT COMES TO YOU
Last night I had this amazing dream about dishes. Yes, those things in your cabinets. They were stark white and shiny, but the handles of the tea cups and serving dishes were all arms and legs! I woke up and went straight to the kitchen only to be disappointed that I had dreamed them up. They were, so cool.
Sunday mornings are often the only time I have to check in with the blogs I love. Imagine my surprise when over at DesignersBlock I spotted this half way down the page! Pfft!
All of this comes from an egg that is giving me fits this week. On Thursday I developed what looks like an egg shoved under the skin on my right wrist. After 3 days with this thing, last night I was convinced it was cancerous (not just a strange reaction to a bug bite I may or may not have gotten Wed. night) and spent the hour before bed researching metastatic bone cancer. Life after cancer as a designer = dreams about leggy dishware.
This morning it seems the universe is having a good laugh with me. It has also inspired me to sketch out my dishes in the hopes that one day I can make them! Guess it must not be cancer!
xoxo, wee

FOOD, THE CONTINUING SERIES - MELON!
This really is the world's most exceptional melon, except for the fact that it is a Cantaloupe! My least favorite melon.

HOW TO No. 1, GUACAMOLE
I am starting a new section - the How To Do Stuff Like Wee section! Lately everyone seems to want cooking tips. In honor of my California roots I thought I would start with Guacamole! All the ingredients can be found at Whole Foods or a local farmer's market. Note: this contains a lot of raw garlic, make and eat at the risk of your comapnions! He he!!!
one Haas avocado
some onion or shallot
a bit of crushed red pepper flake
3 garlic cloves
10 cherry tomatoes
1/2 jalapeño
lemon juice
plain yogurt or creme fraiche
mexican spices
collect all your ingredients, one large bowl, fork, small bowl (for trash), large knife
clear your work space
look my garlic sprouted! no matter

finely mince the garlic, it will become fluffy

next coarse chop the jalapeño (for less heat seed first)

now coarse chop your onion (I used a shallot because that's what I had)
for size comparison
time to quarter the tomatoes (you can cut smaller if you prefer)
dust with the mexican spices
I use this kind (it's great with lime juice on melon!!)

all in the bowl (don't forget the red pepper flake)
now slice the avocado and remove the pit -- do NOT discard

cut the flesh into small squares and add to the bowl
take your fork and mash, mash, mash (it will remain chunky, for a smoother texture mash avocado separately then combine with the other ingredients)

add creme fraiche or yogurt to improve the creaminess
creme fraiche can be overpowering, add slowly, taste often

you can see the chunky texture
finally, dress with a dash of lemon juice and add the pit to keep from going brown
serve with chips or pita
throw out the small bowl of trash and you are finished! Now enjoy!

WHOLE FOODS 12/07
I couldn't resist going a wee bit nuts at the new Whole Foods when I was attacked by all the color! Holy carrots, tomatoes, and squash - oh my! I wandered the aisles gently lifting goodies into my cart for nearly an hour and a half. In the veggies section I started thinking about partnerships and relationships and individuality. How exactly does one blend all 3? I have never been good at that particular trifecta. It seems I ever only manage 2 at a time.
I finally fessed up to myself that I love to grocery shop alone. I hate using a list or minding someone else's agenda. I get flustered and fussy. Today was luxurious. I visited the veggies twice! I bought little bits of anything I pleased. That's the other thing about being a single, you can shop cheap and try whatever strikes your fancy.
Maybe the secret to being a + 1, is finding your food buddy, who still lets you shop like a single!

oh la la! I have never had this kind of melon before!
for the office. no more plastic sporks for me!

how awesome do these sound!!?

meat!
I love you cheese!!

* editor's note: the above is all fine and good until I get home and make waaaay too much food for one! Help!

WEATHER UPDATE
I know these are not the exact wedge wellies on my Chrismukkah list, but aren't they cute!? So I am replacing the boots on the list with this uber cute leather jacket from Piero Tucci.

7 MILES IN THE SNOW
There are days when from the very first moment you open your peepers you know that you would be better off just snapping them shut and pretending to still be asleep. Today was a mother one of those.
Firstly I nearly slept through the alarm. Then in my mad dash around the apartment I lost track of my employee badge. Goodie. Once at my desk, wearing my sticker badge of shame, yay!, I started to sneeze. And sneeze. This was not a good sign. When my nose starts going it is next to impossible to stop. Next on my to do list, was exploding soup in the office microwave. At this point I knew the whole day was shot. It was 8:27am.
By lunch I was in an allergy fog while trying desperately to pre-press files and keep my nose attached to my head. Then my computer which had been finicky all morning, began to act up in earnest. Every time I saved a file it crashed. If I opened an email, it was a 3 minute waiting game with the spinning color wheel. All the while used kleenex were floating down and making drifts at my feet.
At 6:30 I made my escape after fashioning snow shoes out of used X-acto blades and glittery thread. I followed out a fellow office mate who commented on my nasal noise. Lovely, the whole office had been getting an earful. As we exited the building I realized that all my evening plans would never materialize. I would not get my Christmas tree before the rain predicted for tomorrow. A trip to Whole Foods was out of the question and the laundry was going to spend a few more nights on the bedroom floor. I got it together enough to stop and put gas in the car. I am not entirely sure what came over me, but somehow I got confused and only bought 4 gallons. Not even half a tank I realized as I drove away.
Home, James. I am a menace even to myself. I pray for tomorrow.

© MURAKAMI
It was a Sunday of culture and commerce. Nobody does it better than Takashi Murakami. First up was the Dick Hebdige discussion/essay review of © Murakami. Then, time for the show itself!

THINGS THAT REMAIN A MYSTERY
1. Why does my mobile charge at different speeds? I swear it's like my own personal poltergeist. "Today? I only need a half hour. Tomorrow, that all depends on when Blake wants to play tennis." Did I mention that my phone belongs to a country club and answers to the name Babs?
2. The reasoning behind why Firefox chooses to only freak the fu*k out, crash when I am trying to:
A. Blog
B. Watch 21 Jump Street on Youtube
If anyone cares to enlighten me (or knows how to goad Babs into better behavior), that would be awesome.
